WHAT IS FIRE & ICE THERAPY?
In fire & ice therapy (contrast therapy), you alternate between the cold plunge and the infrared sauna. Typically, the sequence starts with the sauna, followed by a brief immersion in the cold plunge, and then back to the sauna. This cycle is repeated a few times, with varying durations depending on individual tolerance and goals. The transitions between heat and cold cause a "pumping" effect on the circulatory system, which helps to flush out waste products and promote oxygen and nutrient delivery to muscles and other tissues.
How often should contrast therapy be done? The more frequently it is practiced, the more effective it will be. Studies have found significant health improvements in people who practice this contrast therapy routinely compared to those that practice on and off.
· Fire & Ice sessions are included in the Unlimited CrossFit FBG package.
CONTRAST THERAPY BENEFITS*
- Increased Metabolism: There are also suggestions that contrast therapy (primarily cold exposure) can help boost metabolism, the rate at which the body passively burns calories, thus helping you lose weight and achieve a leaner physique.
- Increased Human Growth Hormone (HGH): Studies have shown that contrast therapy, cold plunging for 2-3 minutes and then sauna for 10-20 minutes, for 3 rounds, once a week, can increase HGH by 16x. HGH is important for muscle development and growth, enhanced cognitive function, boosts immune system function, aids in fat metabolism and weight management.
- Enhanced Muscle Recovery: The combination of heat and cold reduces muscle soreness and speeds up recovery after exercise or strenuous activity.
- Reduced Inflammation and Pain: The cold plunge helps reduce inflammation and manage pain, while the sauna promotes relaxation and muscle relaxation.
- Improved Circulation: The alternating dilation and constriction of blood vessels improves blood flow throughout the body.
- Stress Reduction: The heat from the infrared sauna can have a calming effect, while the cold plunge is refreshing and revitalizing.
- Immune System Boost: The thermal stress from this therapy can stimulate the immune system and increase resistance to illnesses.

WHAT TO EXPECT?
Contrast therapy (Fire & Ice) involves alternating between a cold plunge and an infrared sauna, using extreme temperatures to boost recovery, improve circulation, and manage pain. It's commonly used by athletes and those seeking wellness benefits from temperature-based therapies.
- Cold Plunge: This involves submerging in cold water, usually below 10°C (50°F), which causes blood vessels to constrict. The cold can reduce inflammation, swelling, and pain, while providing an invigorating boost to your system. (For more information, click “Ice Drop-In” in the drop-down menu.)
- Infrared Sauna: This uses infrared light to produce deep heat. The warmth dilates blood vessels, aiding in relaxation, muscle recovery, and circulation. The sauna also promotes sweating, which helps detoxify the body. (For more information, click “Fire Drop-In” in the drop-down menu.)
- Precautions: If you have cardiovascular issues or other health conditions, take precautions and consult a healthcare professional before attempting a cold plunge or sauna session. It's best to have supervision or a buddy system for safety.
